The Crucible – Old Vic – review/thoughts

The Crucible is a play I know well.  My mother is an English teacher, and has taught this play for many years; as happened with many other works of literature, I got to know it through glimpses of the film on our television as she cued up certain scenes for her students, or worksheets lying around with questions on theme and diction.  I’m sure there are still at least a dozen copies residing in various rooms of my parents’ house.

Despite all this, though, and despite studying it in school myself, long after I’d first read it, I had never actually seen a production of the play, though always longed to.  So I booked for this as soon as I saw it was happening; then waited through a month plus of good reviews; then finally went last week.
